Graduate Award Applications

Graduate Teaching Award for Independent Instruction

Each year, the Center for Teaching Excellence, with the generous support of the Office of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies, recognizes two graduate students with a Graduate Teaching Award for Independent Instruction.

All graduate students and alumni who were graduate instructors of record during the previous academic year, and who have not yet won the award, are eligible to apply. The first-round application, which consists of a cover letter, short answers to questions about teaching, and student evaluation results is due by October 13th. A committee of graduate students who have participated in the CTE Certificate Program will then use this material to narrow down the field to six finalists. Finalists will be notified by December 5th and asked to submit a teaching portfolio by February 1st. And in the final step of the process, a committee of CTE Faculty Fellows and Graduate Fellows will select two winners by March 22nd.

If you were an instructor of record in the Fall of 2022, Spring of 2023, or Summer of 2023, you are eligible to apply for the 2024 Graduate Teaching Award for Independent Instruction.

Graduate Teaching Award for Student Support

We also recognize one graduate student each year who has distinguished themselves in the support he or she has provided to students working to assist an Instructor of Record. Any work graduate students do with students in these courses (during class, recitations, or office hours) can count as student support.

All graduate students and alumni who assisted Instructors of Record during the previous academic year, and who have not yet won the award, may apply for this award. At the time of application, applicants will be asked to provide the contact information for one undergraduate student who can describe the support offered by the applicant. The deadline to submit the application is November 1st. Undergraduate students will then be contacted by the CTE staff and asked to submit their support letter by December 15th. An initial committee of graduate students from the CTE Graduate Advisory Board will narrow the field to 6 finalists, and a second committee of CTE Faculty Fellows and Graduate Fellows will select the winner by March 22nd.

If you offered support to undergraduate student in a course taught in the Fall of 2022, Spring of 2023, or Summer of 2023, you are eligible to apply for the 2024 Graduate Teaching Award for Student Support.

Graduate Teaching Award for Course Support

Finally, we also recognize one graduate student who has distinguished themselves in the course support they have provided to an Instructor of Record. Because we are already recognizing graduate students with a student support award, the focus of this award is on substantive contributions to course design and delivery. Examples of course support include, but are not limited to, contributions to the design of the syllabus, individual assignments, on-line tutorials, or the delivery of various in-class lessons and activities.

All graduate students and alumni who assisted Instructors of Record during the previous academic year, and who have not yet won the award, may be nominated for this award. As this is an award for course support, graduate students must be nominated by the Instructor of Record to whom they provided assistance. The deadline to receive these nominations is November 1st. Those nominated will then be contacted and invited to apply for the award by December 15th. An initial committee of graduate students from the CTE Graduate Advisory Board will narrow the field to 6 finalists, and a second committee of CTE Faculty Fellows and Graduate Fellows will select the winner by March 22nd.

If you are a faculty member, postdoc, or other instructor of record who would like to nominate a graduate student from a course you taught in the Fall of 2022, Spring of 2023, or Summer of 2023, you can access the nomination form below.
