Graduate Fellowships

Graduate Fellows (2 per year)

Prerequisites

Completion of both UNIV 500 and UNIV 501 prior to the fellowship year.

Responsibilities

Each Graduate Fellow commits to spending 30 hours on CTE-related activities over the course of the academic year. Fellows are responsible for:

  • Collaborating to design and facilitate the CTE’s Pedagogy Workshop Series for Graduate Students. The series consists of two 90-min workshops per academic year. Each fellow leads the design and planning of one workshop.
  • Providing feedback to other Fellow(s) on their workshop design.
  • Serving on Graduate Teaching Awards Committees.
  • Collaborating with CTE staff to develop and/or facilitate additional graduate student programming (as needed).
Stipend

$1000 for the academic year

Application Process

Submit the online application form, including a letter of application.

  • In your application letter, you should:
    • Describe your interest in the fellowship and goals as a fellow.
    • Discuss how you hope to contribute to graduate student development.
    • Describe any teaching and/or TA experience (if applicable).
    • Propose a workshop topic, with a brief description (about 150 words) and a one-paragraph justification for the utility of this particular workshop.
  • Past examples of workshops include: Student Motivation, Inclusive Teaching, Effective Feedback, Student-Centered Syllabus, Assessment for Learning, Interactive Lecturing, Leading Effective Discussions

Teaching Fellow (1 per year)

Prerequisites

Completion of UNIV 500, UNIV 501, and UNIV 502 prior to the fellowship year; current enrollment or completion of UNIV 599 in the fellowship year.

Responsibilities

The Graduate Teaching Fellow serves as the instructor of record for COLL 300: Pedagogy for Student Instructors and is responsible for teaching the course in both the fall and spring semesters, with support from a CTE member. COLL 300 is a 6-week course (enrollment cap 25) required for all undergraduate students who want to lead a student-taught course (STC); in this class, undergraduates develop a syllabus, learn the basic principles of effective teaching, and receive guidance on their course proposal forms. Teaching Fellows are responsible for:

  • Teaching weekly sessions of COLL 300.
  • Supporting students as they design and develop their 1-credit COLL course.
  • Providing timely feedback on assignments.
  • Tracking completion of student work and participation in Canvas.
  • Entering final course grades through ESTHER.
  • Meeting periodically with the supporting CTE member.
Stipend

$2000 for the academic year

Senior Teaching Fellow (2 per year)

Prerequisites

Completion of all Graduate Certificate in Teaching and Learning coursework (UNIV 500, UNIV 501, UNIV 502, and UNIV 599) prior to the fellowship year.

Responsibilities

The Senior Graduate Teaching Fellows serve as the instructors of record for UNIV 502: Practicum in College Teaching and are responsible for teaching the course in both the fall and spring semesters (enrollment cap 6 per section), with support from a CTE member. UNIV 502 is a semester-long course that is required for graduate students who are pursuing the Graduate Certificate in Teaching and Learning. In this class, students design and deliver teaching demonstrations; receive feedback on their teaching; and discuss the place of teaching in the broader landscapes of higher education and the academic job market. Senior Teaching Fellows are responsible for:

  • Attending and facilitating weekly sessions of UNIV 502.
  • Delivering feedback on students’ teaching demonstrations.
  • Tracking completion of student work and participation in Canvas.
  • Entering course grades in ESTHER.
  • Meeting regularly with other Senior Teaching Fellow(s) and the supporting CTE member to discuss and debrief about the course.

$4000 for the academic year
