Here at Rice’s Center for Teaching Excellence we believe that it is important to recognize great teachers, support them in their growth, and learn from their experiences. One of the many ways we do this is through Rice’s internal teaching awards as well as nominations for teaching awards at the state and national level. Teaching awards not only highlight the exceptional teaching done by individual instructors, but also play a role in cultivating a strong ‘culture of teaching’ at Rice.
Rice faculty have an enduring history of being recognized with external teaching awards at the state and national level. Since 1958 nine faculty have won Minnie Stevens Piper Foundation Professor award and more recently Professor of Psychology Michelle "Mikki" Hebl was the recipient of the 2016 Robert Foster Cherry Award for Great Teaching. In addition, many faculty have been recognized through selective teaching awards within their fields and disciplines.
In our efforts to support the nomination of Rice faculty for external teaching awards we have put together a comprehensive list of external teaching awards for faculty at four-year institutions. We hope that this will not only be a resource for faculty, administrators, and students at Rice, but also for those at other institutions of higher education.
