At the end of each academic year, the CTE hosts the university's formal teaching awards ceremony that provides an opportunity for Rice administrators, faculty, and students to celebrate the contributions of Rice instructors who have devoted themselves to both their students and the craft of teaching.

A special presentation of the George R. Brown Certificate of Highest Merit will be made to James N. Brown, Professor of Economics. The Certificate bestows the status of honorary lifetime recipient, and its winners are retired from the Brown competition.
